We are know the aum symbol has given below. It is widely used in devnagri (hindi and marathi, which does not use modi lipi anymore). Oriya, Bengali, Assamese and Gujarathi scripts also have similar shape of aum.

I was wondering that all vedic symbols like conch, swastika, kalash, chakra, triangles in sri yantra, are so perfectly geometrical and symmetric, how is it that Aum is not symmetrical at all? This set me thinking

I then realized that it is due to the "lipi" used. which is devnagri lipi. There are many forms of aum, each dependent on the lipi or language of writing used. these are given below, confirming the line of thinking.

When one looks at the various script in which AUM is written, one wonders, what is the actual symbol of AUM? These scripts have described in the best way the phonetic sound of aum.

I also wondered that everything in sanatana dharma is symbolic and internal, what does the vedic aum indicate? what is it pointing at?

This quest lead to find the real shape of AUM as I was reading the Dyneshwari. This reference is taken from our Guru, Sant Dyneshwars composition Dyneshwari, a commentary on Shree bhagwad gita. A real master, who has a guru parampara, or a lineage of enlightened gurus can be trusted completely as the knowledge is pure,

Ovi from Dyneshwari describing the vedic aum shape in ganesh vandana at the start. Chapter 1, Ovi 19. Sant Dyneshwar is doing ganesh vandana. Lord Ganesha, like all other devtas (not gods) are symbolic, each representing something within ourself. The sanatana dharma (eternal duties) is designed to include everyone and benefit everyone (loka samasta sukhino bhavantu). Dyneshwar Mauli (the only saint to be addressed as mauli, or mother, for his overflowing love for all the beings in the universe), describes the form of lord ganesha as follows:

अकार चरणयुगुल । उकार उदर विशाल । मकार महामंडल । मस्तकाकारें ॥ १९ ॥

The sound A is the representation of a pair of legs. The U is the representation of the large stomach and M is the large head with a crown.

Some of the scripts like balinese, Malyalam, Triyanka are closer to the vedic aum symbol, though none of them is the prefect representation.

Position of Chakras, with respect to Aum are shown above The bottom 3 dots are the origin of A. The center dot U. And the top 3 dots are M. When one says aum, the vibration are felt in this region. Hence the mapping and the conclusion, supporting the Dyneshwari ovi. There is nothing external. Everything is internal.

As the self is realized, the aum and the self collapse into a single entity. A perfect state. vibrating at the universal frequency.

Now the question remains, why do we write Aum, the way we do? Lets see how. Lets start with the vedic aum symbol

Step 1: Rotate the vedic aum symbol sideways.

step 2, for easy flow of writing, modify the symbol to write without lifting the pen too much.

It looks like this. Thus, When the vedic aum symbol is turned sideways and modified a bit, you get the aum symbol we write in devnagri lipi. The similarity between vedic aum and devnagri aum is clear.

Sound of aum and lipi

The vedic era never had a lipi, all knowledge was passed down verbally, by speech, memorizing, generation after generation. No wonder that Aum as we know in the lipi does not match to the perfectly symmetrical vedic aum symbol.

An interesting point to note is that no matter what lipi is used, everyone pronounces aum the same way,. it simply can not go wrong, as it is a sound that is produced when the mouth is open and slowly closes. A perfectly natural state, tongue is not used at all. Whether it is Aum or Om, the sound is similar. This confirms that though lipi may represent a near phonetic representation of a word, you can not really capture the exact resonance of aum sound in any script.

Blessing When you chant aum, when you listen to the internal aum, that is eternal, remember that you are aum itself. there is no difference. the person chanting, the act of chanting and the chant of aum, are al one.
