There are many interpretations of the knot in sacred thread worn after upnayanam. It is said that the knot of the sacred thread represents the brahmagath or the knot of brahman, the consciousness. This set me thinking on the true significance...
Studying this closely, I observed that while doing gayatri japa by holding the brahmagath, the thumb is positioned slightly to the right of the chest. Its a natural position of the hand.

The thread becomes a medium to position the hand at the right spot.
This is the position of the brahamagath within self. There are lot of abhangas in marathi which talk of brahamagath being opened and its link with enlightenment.
The vibrations from the gayatri mantra accelerate the opening of the brahmagath.
The kundalini energy when it reaches the top of the head, divine cosmic every starts flowing down, as blissful nectar, finding its way to the brahmagathi.
As the nectar flows from the head to the chest in the brhamagath, the enlightenment state is reached.
Hence the sacred thread is the medium. A facilitator to easily position the thumb vibration at the right place to accelerate the process.
It's always within....that's all.
