We all seek happiness. We are doing things to make us happy. That's all. That is the state of the mind we seek. The happiness we get from achieving a goal, vs eating a pizza is the same...actually. Think over it...
Out of the four parts of the mind, memory (chitta) and identity (ahamkara) contribute to the state of the mind.
Manas is the thoughts and feelings, which is the outcome of the state.
buddhi, the intellect. actually does not contribute much to the state, unless you have absolute clarity.
State of mind can be put in a simple equation and analyzed as given below.
Ahamkara x chitta = mind state. Axc=m
Ahamkara is identity. Everyone has limited identities. Father, husband, business man (roles in life)
Chitta memories are in millions, from this life and the accumulated memories of lifetime of evolution(dna).
Events on their own mean nothing to us, and have no power to alter our state of mind. When we relate to an event with an identity, it creates associations, memories, which alter our state of mind.
For example, we are not able to relate to millions who go hungry to bed every night, as the information is not linked to any identity we have currently. But if someone delays a pizza delivery, we take it personally, as it relates our identity as a role of parent, mother, father, husband, wife etc, who has ordered this pizza for the family.
Memories are themselves not constant as they keep getting deleted and distorted in the chitta all the time. It's an ongoing process. That's why you don't remember what you had for dinner on 15 th sept 2105!
So the memory is not only changing, but also vast.
It is a point to note that while pain is a physical sensation, suffering is completely in the mind.
Elimination of suffering, leads you to the other state of mind...happiness.
To eliminate suffering (which is a state of mind) , you can make either of identity or memory zero.
Making chitta zero is a very long process, as events will keep forming new memories. It is like trying to empty a dam, on a river with a bucket. It's not going to work. more water will get added in a minute, than you can remove!
Second option is to make identity zero. Meaning, understanding clearly that you are one consciousness. There are no other real identities. The identities we have taken up like husband, wife, son, daughter are like hats we wear. But the head on which the hats are put on is the real identity.
There are many ways to do this like yoga, bhakti, karma and gyana. While they all work together, "Who am I", from mandukya upanishad and eternal awareness of sound of silence seem to be the simplest. All it takes is a few hours of study and understanding. That's all.
Once the state of mind is clear, joyful, intellect comes into play, being fully aware of that is happening and seeing things as they are, without any bias.
The journey to the state of happiness is very simple, actually and its not elusive at all...
